It doesn’t matter if you’re in the backcountry, car camping, or having a bonfire in your backyard, s’mores make the best campfire companions. Traditional s’mores taste great, but we also love experimenting with different ways to take s’mores to the next level.
We wanted to give you an excuse to get outside and roast some marshmallows for s’mores, so we made a list of some of our favorite tricks and s’more ingredient varieties.
Exchange the graham cracker with your favorite cookie. You can play around with different flavors, too. Some of our favorites are chocolate chip, peanut butter, and snickerdoodle. The next time you’re thinking about having a campfire, whip up a batch of cookies, invite some friends, and give it a try!
Think outside the box and replace your classic Hershey’s chocolate with your favorite chocolate bar or chocolate candy bar. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups work as a great alternative to chocolate as do caramel filled chocolate squares. Cookies ‘n’ Cream or white chocolate also satisfy the taste buds quite well.
South of the Border
Have leftover soft shell tortillas? Use half of a tortilla round in place of your graham crackers to create a s’more taco. You can easily fold the fold the tortilla around the roasted marshmallow to help you remove it from the stick.
Take this a step further and make a s’more burrito by placing your s’more ingredients in a whole tortilla round, close it up like a burrito, and wrap it in tinfoil. Place the tinfoil in the hot coals for about 5 minutes, or until the s’more ingredients have melted, and carefully remove it from the fire. Unwrap the tinfoil, let it cool for a moment, and enjoy! For the S’more burrito we recommend using mini marshmallows and mini chocolate chips or M&M’s (or other tasty baking chips and shelled candies) so they melt a little faster.
Heat It Up
S’mores are known for the sticky roasted marshmallows. But who says this is the only s’more ingredient that needs to be heated? The next time you’re making s’mores, prep your graham crackers, cookies, or tortilla shells and chocolate and place them close to the fire so they too can warm up while you roast your marshmallow. The softened shell and melted chocolate make all the difference!
Wood Burning Stoves
We swear s’mores taste better after a long day of paddling, hiking, or biking into the backcountry. However, we don’t always have the time or energy to collect wood to build a campfire. That doesn’t stop us from enjoying a s’more or two though. After we’ve used our Littlbug Senior stove to cook dinner, the stove transforms into the perfect marshmallow roasting fire. The two pot rest pieces used on the higher setting make the perfect place to warm your chocolate and shell pieces while you roast your marshmallow.
