Enjoying Spring Mud Season

Posted by Esther Drebelbis of Littlbug Enterprises on

Winter storms are coming to a close and summer is right around the corner. But, spring’s puzzling weather patterns can make planning trips and getting outside difficult. Disappearing snowpacks make winter sports difficult and the melting snow creates muddy conditions for biking and hiking.

Don’t worry! You can still give into your spring fever, get outside, and enjoy the longer daylight hours. We want to make sure you maximize your springtime enjoyment.

Enjoying a Springtime Wilderness Walk

Layer up!

We believe spring invented layering--and we love it! Temperatures and weather can change quickly and daily this time of year. So, layer up and be prepared for whatever mother nature throws your way. A base layer, mid layer, and a light jacket usually works for the varying conditions. And don’t forget to throw in a rain jacket, just in case the April showers come.

Explore the trails by foot

Trails turn from ice to mud quickly in the spring. If you’re heading out early in the day, put extra traction on your shoes like Yaktrax to help keep you from slipping and sliding.

Waterproof shoes work great in this environment, too. Once the daytime temperatures warm up, the snow and ice turn to mud. Waterproof shoes keep your feet comfortable and dry. For extra protection, you can throw on ankle gaiters.

Take your wheels for a spin

If you enjoy mountain biking, you probably know it’s not always wise to ride the trails when they are muddy. To help you get ready for biking season, explore local paved trails or give road biking a try.

Spring camping

Spring makes for great camping weather. It’s an opportunity to give cooler camping a try if you’re interested in winter camping. It’s also a great time to try hammock camping. You’ll want to use an insulated sleeping pad and a 0 - 15 degree sleeping bag to stay warm during the cool nights.

Beat the bugs & bears

Along with the budding trees and blossoming flowers, springtime brings ticks. This time of year these pesky little insects thrive. Tick borne diseases are serious and not to be trifled with. To help spot these little pests, wear light colored clothing. Another trick is to wear pants and tuck them into your socks. This may seem a little nerdy, but thankfully, nature doesn't judge your fashion choices.

Using a Wood Backpack Stove & Being Aware of Ticks

Littlbug Tip: We treat our clothing and gear with the insecticide permethrin and have found it to be very effective. Be sure to follow the application instructions.  When done properly, one application will last for several weeks and won't wash out.

Bears are another thing to be aware of while on the trail in the spring. Bears begin waking up and soon have their cubs with them. Be alert while you’re hiking. Don’t be afraid to make noise while you’re in the forest, which can alert them to your presence and not surprise them. Keep an eye out for bear scat too, which can signal they’ve been in the area.

Get outta town

While some areas experience mud season in the spring, others thrive this time of year. Spring is a great time to check off bucket list trips. Some perfect places to explore are in the Southwest United States including Utah and Arizona. If you’re looking for a backpacking trip to eat up some of your mud season blues, a great hidden thru hike perfect for spring can be found in Ouachita National Recreation Trail in Oklahoma and Arkansas. This would also be a great opportunity to try out wood-burning stoves, like the Littlbug Junior stove.
